United Academics’ mission is to connect science and society: to create a world where knowledge is easily accessible for all, where all those who wish to are free to publish their research papers, where the author decides on copyright and incentive and where the peer review becomes a test of quality, rather than a barrier to publication.A place where companies, institutes and academics collaborate to generate new, exciting and productive research.
In the current scientific publishing system, the gatekeepers are charging high fees for publishing while limiting access to that research by charging membership fees. Furthermore, authors lose copyrights and the publication process is incredibly slow. Fortunately, times are changing. Open access publishing is supported and even demanded by more and more academics. Several legislators have already committed to implementing an open access-only policy. The question is no longer ‘if’ we should have open access. The question is about ‘how’ we should develop it and promote it further.
United Academics (www.united-academics.org) was founded in September 2009 by current main shareholder Louis Lapidaire. The company is based in the centre of Amsterdam, where a small team of young and driven professionals is working hard to realize the company’s goals and develop the products, services and academic support structures that will position UA as an innovator in academic, open-access publishing.
In the United Academics Library our users can search our database for research papers, dissertations and theses. The articles are open access, meaning they can be read and downloaded for free. Furthermore, users can order from our large selection of (academic) books, which we deliver to them worldwide.
The United Academics Journal of Social Sciences is interdisciplinary and peer reviewed. Immediate Open Access is provided to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. Every article that is published is submitted to the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). The journal, which is published bi-monthly, is dedicated to a specific topic. Each issue consists of a collection of articles, work-in-progress pieces and book reviews showcasing the broadest range of new (interdisciplinary) research in Social Sciences from both established academics and students.
By putting today’s research in the context of everyday life, United Academics Magazine strives to connect science with society.
